Airalo eSIM Activation Process

Step-by-step guide from device check to first connection abroad

The 8-step Airalo eSIM activation journey

Step 1: Verify eSIM Hardware Support

Open your device Settings. On iPhone: Settings → General → About → look for "Available SIM" entries. On Android: Settings → Network → SIM Cards → Add eSIM. The presence of this option confirms hardware support. If absent, your device does not support eSIM and cannot use Airalo.

Step 2: Confirm Carrier Unlock Status

A carrier-locked device will not accept an eSIM from another provider. UK devices purchased on contract from EE, Vodafone, O2, or Three may be locked. Contact your provider to request an unlock — this is typically free after the minimum contract period and takes 1–3 business days to process.

Step 3: Create Airalo Account

Download the Airalo app (iOS/Android) or visit airalo.com. Register with your email address. Verify your email via the confirmation link. Complete your profile with your name and preferred currency. UK users may wish to set their currency to USD to see plan prices as listed, then calculate GBP equivalents.

Step 4: Research and Select a Plan

Search for your destination. Review local, regional, and global options. For each plan, check: data allowance, validity period and start conditions, whether top-ups are available, hotspot permission, and the specific countries covered (for regional plans). Compare at least two plans before deciding.

Step 5: Purchase and Save QR Code

Complete purchase via card or Airmoney credits. Your QR code is delivered to your email instantly. Screenshot the QR code and save it in a cloud-accessible location. It is also accessible in the Airalo app under "My eSIMs".

Step 6: Install the eSIM Profile

iOS: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → Use QR Code. Scan the code. Label the plan. Set as secondary line. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR Code. Installation requires Wi-Fi — complete at home before travelling.

Step 7: Configure Data Routing

Set the Airalo eSIM as your data line. Enable Data Roaming on the Airalo line specifically. Keep your primary UK SIM active for calls and SMS. Test by disabling Wi-Fi briefly — mobile data should route through the Airalo eSIM.

Step 8: Activate and Monitor Abroad

Upon arrival, your device connects automatically to a local network. If not, go to Settings → Cellular → select Airalo eSIM → Network Selection → Automatic. Monitor data usage in the Airalo app. Top up before running out if your plan supports it. On return, switch data back to your UK SIM.

Common Issues & Solutions

QR code will not scan

Ensure good lighting and a steady hand. Increase screen brightness on the QR code display device. Use manual entry (SM-DP+ address and activation code) as an alternative — both are available in the Airalo app.

eSIM not connecting after arrival

Confirm Data Roaming is enabled on the Airalo eSIM line. Try manual network selection. Restart the device. Check Airalo's coverage map for your specific location — rural areas may have limited coverage.

Data balance not updating in app

App balance updates may lag up to 15 minutes. Force-refresh the app. Use your device's built-in data usage monitor for real-time tracking. Contact Airalo support if discrepancy persists after 24 hours.

eSIM installation failed

Ensure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection during installation. Check that your device OS is up to date. Try restarting the device and attempting installation again. If the issue persists, contact Airalo support — they can reissue the QR code in some circumstances.
